Grading Procedures
Students are graded weekly in the following areas:
Rehearsal Techiques
Singing Ability
Sight Singing
Theory and Aural Skills
Other
Students will be given bi-weekly self-grading rubircs in addition to the teacher rubric in each area.
Rehearsal Techniques:
Includes following instructions, following rehearsal procedures, being on task, maintaining proper singing posture, avoiding classroom interruptions and disruptions, being a good team member and generally demonstrating a strong work ethic and positive attitude.
Singing Ability:
Includes singing correct pitches in tune, singing with proper vocal technique. Students to do not have to have an innate talent for singing to do well. If a student is showing sufficient progress week to week, and demonstrates a willingness to work on improvement, then this student will have a higher grade than someone not working to their full potential.
Sight Singing:
The abiliy to sing correct pitches and/or rhythms that a student has not seen before. Sight singing is a difficult skill that takes lots of practice, and we do it every day in class. Students grades will be based on the progress they make in this area and their willingness to improve rather than their natural ability to sight sing.
Theory and Aural Skills:
Every other week, students will have a written theory (music reading) or aural (ear training) skills assignment or quiz. Some assignments will be done by the entire class, and others will be homework. Grades will be based on accuracy and level of completion.
Other:
There may be times I have to separate the choir into sectionals for rehearsals. When this happens, students will be in "other" mode. This means they are either following along in their own music, working on the written assignment if given, or silently reading. Students will be graded on how wisely they choose to use this time.
